Ashwin Mitchell Los Angeles

Available for writing and photography work

Hi — I'm Ashwin. I write scripts and I shoot stills, and I'd like to work on your thing.

I'm 25, I live in Los Angeles, and I'm three years out of undergrad and two out of an MFA. I taught screenwriting at UCLA while I was there. I have four original screenplays, a photography practice that pays the bills, and a lot of appetite. This site is the honest version: what I do, how I do it, what it costs.

The three things I do

Writing, stills, and the bit where those two overlap.

The overlap is the actual pitch. I'm a writer who can also shoot, which means I think about a frame the way I think about a scene — what it's withholding, what it's telling you, what comes next.

Screenwriting

Four original specs: two features, an hour-long thriller anthology and a half-hour comedy. I've written and produced a narrative short, co-written an award-winning episodic, and taught Introductory Screenwriting at UCLA four quarters running.

Editorial photography

Concept, atmosphere, styling and narrative cohesion — I run it from pre-production and creative direction through final delivery. Head of Photography at Across the Line, and I shoot my own narrative series like The Getaway.

Unit stills & BTS

Twelve short films and six vertical series so far, plus poster imaging. Everything comes back processed for press, marketing and awards consideration — not a dump of raws for someone else to fix.

What I'm looking for

Rooms, rewrites, and reasons to shoot.

I'm at the stage where the most useful thing anyone can hand me is a job. Specifically, I'm looking for:

  • Staffing or assistant work on a scripted show, or anything that puts me near a room.
  • Read requests from managers, agents and producers — the samples are one click away.
  • Rewrites, punch-ups, coverage and script-service work on other people's material.
  • Unit stills on shorts, features and vertical series — union or non-union.
  • Editorial commissions where someone actually wants a point of view, not just clean frames.

If you have a project and you're not sure which of those it is, email me and describe it in a paragraph. I'll tell you honestly whether I'm the right person.

Scripts on the shelf

Four finished originals.

Loglines, comps and reading samples live on the writing page, which is password-protected. Here is what each one is, in the open.

IMPRESSIONS

Feature · Tár meets Amadeus

A composer, a competition and a rival who is better connected than he is. Logline behind the password.

AFTER DEATH

Hour-long thriller anthology · Twilight Zone meets folklore

An anthology built out of urban legends, with a pilot that puts one of them somewhere very uncomfortable. Logline behind the password.

HORNLINE

Half-hour comedy · Abbott Elementary meets Drumline

A mockumentary about Texas high school marching band, written from first-hand experience. Logline behind the password.

LIKE TEARS IN THE RAIN

Feature · Blade Runner 2049 meets Vertigo

Grief, a second chance at love, and a machine that cannot quite do the job. Logline behind the password.

"She doesn't look like she ran. She looks like she won."

That's the last line of The Getaway, a photo series I wrote before I shot it. It's the clearest thing I can show you about how the two halves of my work feed each other — three acts, one character, no dialogue. The full case study walks through the three acts and what writing a photo series first actually changes.

Availability

I teach Digital Photography and art at St. Paul High School in Los Angeles, so weekday daytime shoots need planning ahead. Evenings, weekends and school holidays are open, and I travel — I've toured three seasons of national dance competitions. Writing work fits around all of it.

Based in

Los Angeles. Originally Dallas, Texas. Happy to travel for the right job; travel and lodging quoted separately.

Placeholder — specific delivery windows aren't published anywhere I can verify, so I quote them per job rather than guess here.
