The brief

Athletes who are not usually photographed like this.

Niche sport coverage tends to arrive in two flavours: the action frame, shot from the stands, or the gym-lit promo portrait. Across the Line wanted neither. The mandate was to give creators and athletes outside the mainstream the same treatment a marquee name gets on a fashion cover — lighting, styling, and a point of view about who they are away from the event.

As Head of Photography, Ashwin sets the visual language for each volume and shoots the cover story himself, working with the volume's creative director and producer so the imagery and the written features carry the same argument.

What it demonstrates

Editorial that has to ship.

The Getaway shows what he does with a free hand. Across the Line shows the same eye inside a real production: a creative director's brief, a producer's schedule, hair, make-up and wardrobe on the day, and a publication date that does not move.

Three volumes in, the visual language is consistent enough to be recognisable and loose enough that each subject gets their own treatment — which is the actual job of a head of photography.
