Why it matters who shoots it

A unit stills photographer is a second set of storytelling eyes who has to stay invisible. The useful frame is rarely the one that matches the shot — it is the one that will still make sense on a poster, in a press kit, or in front of an awards voter who has not seen the film.

Ashwin writes and directs, so he knows what the scene is doing before the slate drops. He also works quietly: he has been the 1st AC, the assistant editor and the colorist on other people's sets, which means he knows exactly where not to stand.

A real specialism

Vertical series.

Six vertical-format series as Unit Stills Photographer and Poster Imaging. Vertical drama is its own discipline: episodes are short, the release cadence is fast, and the poster has to work at thumbnail size on a phone before it works anywhere else.

That means composing for a 9:16 crop on the day rather than salvaging it in post, and delivering key art that survives being shrunk to the size of a stamp.
