A writer who
shoots his own
pictures.

Ashwin Mitchell is 25, three years out of undergrad and two out of an MFA at UCLA, where he taught Introductory Screenwriting. Four original screenplays finished. A photography practice that runs from narrative editorials to union unit stills. Based in Los Angeles and available now.

The pitch, in one paragraph

He writes the thing, then he can photograph the thing. Same eye, two crafts, one hire.

Most writers hand over a script and hope someone else can see it. Most stills photographers arrive on set with no idea what the scene is for. Ashwin does both, which means a logline arrives with a look, and a call sheet arrives with someone who has already read for structure.

The clearest proof is The Getaway — an editorial built in three acts, with a protagonist, a want and a reversal, told entirely in photographs.

Case study

The Getaway

A lone thief in a red dress, escaping across Los Angeles. Structured as a film is structured: Act I The Chase, Act II The Calm, Act III The Reward.

“She doesn't look like she ran. She looks like she won.”
